8 Ways Rhodiola can make you Happier and more Productive
Rhodiola & Hawaiian Red Salt is one of Santosha Chocolate‘s eight varieties. It was also one of the first we made over 9 years ago. The subtle rose flavor of Rhodiola merged with Hawaiian red salt in 60% cacao make it one of our most popular bars.
Rhodiola is one of our favorite herbs both for its function and its flavor. Rhodiola is most commonly known for regulating adrenal function and for regulating cortisol levels (the hormone that causes stress). Most commonly cortisol levels need to be lowered, luckily Rhodiola has shown in studies to effectively lower cortisol levels; which are raised from drinking too much caffeine and from information overload (from TV, internet and advertisements). One of our Rhodiola chocolate bars contains 130mg of rhodiola. This bar, like our others, are simply supplements that work as a tonics and we do not advise self-medicating with them.
Rhodiola Rosea, also called Arctic root is an adaptogenic herb meaning that it helps the body adapt to stress without disturbing biological functions. Rhodiola grows at high altitudes in the arctic areas of Europe and Asia. It’s been used as a part of traditional medicine in parts of Asia, Europe and Russia for centuries. It’s been used to treat cancer and tuberculosis in Mongolia, given to newlyweds to boost fertility in Siberia, and used by Vikings to boost endurance and physical strength. In Norway it’s even been used as a food and as a hair wash.
Among the scientific community Rhodiola has received attention for its potential therapeutic capacity as an adaptogen. Adaptogen are natural herbal products which are non-toxic in normal doses, produce a non-specific response, and have a normalizing physiologic influence.
According to Andrew Weil, M.D., “Rhodiola rosea is still widely used in Russia as a tonic and remedy for fatigue, poor attention span, and decreased memory; it is also believed to make workers more productive. In Sweden and other Scandinavian countries it is used to increase the capacity for mental work and to boost general strength and vitality.” (Weil, 16′)
In a 2002 article in the Journal of the American Botanical Council, numerous studies of rhodiola in both humans and animals have indicated that it…
1) helps prevent fatigue
2) lowers stress
3) reduces the damaging effects of oxygen deprivation
4) acts as an antioxidant
5) enhances immune function
6) increases sexual energy
7) boosts mental performance
8) alleviates mild depression
“In addition, a study published in 2007 in the Nordic Journal of Psychiatry, showed that patients with mild-to-moderate depression who took a rhodiola extract reported fewer symptoms of depression than those who took a placebo. Rhodiola appears to work faster than conventional antidepressants, often in less than a week.” (Weil, 16′) Rhodiola luckily has an excellent, almost berry-like taste. We find it combines perfectly with our chocolate. Try our Rhodiola and Hawaiian Red Salt bar to get your daily dose of nourishing delicious chocolate.
